The tradition of naming houses dates back many
centuries in Britain and throughout Europe. In Australia, it is as
old as white settlement, with the early settlers bringing with them
a piece of their background in the form of a house name. It often
revealed something of the person's country or town of origin, their
own language and sometimes their aspirations. House names were
common during a time when there was no street numbering system in
place. It was a means of identifying a house for the benefit of
visitors, home delivery services and the postman.
